WATCH: I Shot in Rockcastle’s Cave
Earlier this year I hit the road for a fun trip to Kentucky with Federal Premium to film for Outdoor Life’s Range Reporters series. I’ve been to Rockcastle Shooting Center to compete in matches, but I’ve never been able to shoot in their cave! In my mind, I pictured an entrance to a small bay inside a large hill. When I learned we’d be winding through a 900-foot long tunnel, 45 feet underground, to say I was excited and a little nervous is an understatement!
I brought my Carry Optics gun, a Smith & Wesson Performance Center C.O.R.E. with the new Trijicon SRO, Safariland ELS Rig, and Taran Tactical Base Pads. To make the most of the unique range conditions, Crimson Trace also supplied a rail-mount flashlight and a laser grip for my M&P and I used clean shooting Federal Premium Syntech Action Pistol.
Approaching the cave looked like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. A small wooden ladder provided an easier descent into a small depression and the entrance to the cave’s rocky entrance. Once fully inside, the temperature dropped and without flashlights, it was pitch black. Creepy spider-looking insects called “cave crickets” skittered along walls and as we passed through we met a local rodent resident. We wound our way past cave walls until the entrance of the stage. My heart rate was up after the quick walkthrough…
Here’s the Range Reporters’ full episode followed by a quick shooting tip on how to shoot on the move in rough terrain.
