Project Childsafe & The Firearms Industry On Real Firearm Safety
Gun safety is not gun control.
Firearm safety should not be taboo. Yet, for so many it is. “Gun safety” is also a high-jacked term. No matter how many times those who are anti-gun and anti-2A declare it, gun safety is NOT gun control legislation. As lawful gun owners, we practice gun safety with cardinal rules and safe storage practices.
We know that gun education is real gun safety and programs like Project Childsafe are making a difference. The NSSF launched Project ChildSafe in 1999 as a nationwide initiative to promote firearms responsibility and provide safety education to all gun owners. The centerpiece of the program is its free firearm safety kits, which include a cable-style gun lock and safety brochure. To date, the program has distributed more than 38 million free gun locks through partnerships with more than 15,000 law enforcement agencies.
The program also provides tools and resources. Earlier this year, Pew Pew Tactical published Talking to Your Kids About Gun Safety.
Most of us grew up in homes where there were only two rules about dad’s gun: Don’t touch it, and don’t ever touch it. Fear of the consequences was enough for me when I was a kid, but there’s a good chance there are those who broke both those rules at some point or another when parents weren’t around.”
You can read the full article at Talking to Your Kids About Gun Safety with Julie Golob – Pew Pew Tactical. I’ve also worked with the NSSF with a video initiative to help parents have a talk about firearms with their children.
The firearms industry has stepped up in a huge way. In fact, the program is almost entirely funded by NSSF member companies. Recently Vista Outdoors, the parent company of my ammo sponsor Federal Premium, as well as Cabelas and Bass Pro Shop announced their support and sponsorship of the Project ChildSafe program. These sponsorships advance shared goals of promoting safe firearms handling, genuine gun safety, and responsible storage.
We believe in the importance of promoting firearm safety and education. Our donation will get more gun locks and gun safety information into the hands of firearms owners, helping to keep our communities safe and passing down this legacy of responsibility to future generations.”
