Suffrage & Self Defense – Celebrating Women’s History Month
Happy Women’s History Month!
I’m sharing a couple of neat things in this post. First off, I made an amazing list…
Five Important Women in Firearms History
Firearms and shooting sports have been growing in popularity with women for some time, but they’ve always been an integral part of shooting culture, from the development of guns to the folklore of the Wild West and far beyond.
Here we will take a look at five women who, without their contributions, the world of shooting may not be the same.
The Shooter’s Log
From famous gunslingers, gun makers, sharpshooters, and snipers, it’s an incredible honor to be listed among women who’ve made their mark in history and firearms. Read the full article here.
Fun fact: Did you know I spent much of my childhood growing up in Seneca Falls, NY, the home of women’s rights? Reminders of the importance of women’s suffrage could be seen throughout the town in historical markers and significant landmarks. In school, we studied pioneers Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, women whose leadership resulted in voting rights and political equality for women in the United States.
I declare to you that woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand.”
Susan B. Anthony
To celebrate March, I shared this famous quote by Susan B. Anthony on social media along with a spread of my personal defense tools and everyday essentials.
There’s my wallet, my phone, hand sanitizer and a tube of lip gloss. I have a small flashlight, a Swiss Army multi-tool, my Spyderco Delica, an extra magazine with Federal Premium HST. My carry gun of choice is a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield with Trijicon night sights.
I daresay I believe Ms. Anthony would be impressed by the number of women who take responsibility for their own protection a hundred years later. Some may scoff at the idea of celebrating Women’s History Month. As a parent, raising two young daughters, I think it’s important to share milestones, victories and special stories about women from the past and in the present. I hope it helps inspire my girls and others so that they too can contribute to a bright future.
