Sharing Shooting & Individual Influence
In a recent blog post, I shared a few ideas on how gun clubs can help grow the shooting sports specifically by providing information and resources on the internet and social media. This post is about how we as individuals can make an impact too. As a pro shooter, my work is considered a form of “influencer marketing.” I showcase products that I use and therefore potentially influence others on their purchases. I love sharing not only the guns and gear I use but also my passion for shooting sports and a lifestyle focused on freedom and self-reliance.

Risk vs . Reward
You don’t have to be a pro shooter to be influential when it comes to shooting sports and gun ownership. I don’t deny that there are risks when it comes to sharing our lifestyle. Those who oppose gun ownership can be cruel, relentless, irrational and even threatening. Sometimes they are people that are close to us, perhaps even family and thus making it even more difficult. I’ve dealt with these challenges myself. I even severed communications with a family member. It was tough but I discovered that there is something special in honesty and surrounding yourself with the things and people that make you feel good, safe and strong.
Being related doesn’t mean there’s a real relationship. When I share my shooting sports journey, it always begins with my immediate family. It also includes what I call my extended family, the men and women I grew up with on the range. In fact, many people describe fellow shooters as
Friends are the family we choose for ourselves.

Who wouldn’t want to grow that circle of special shooters and serve as a connection point for others who are looking for the same thing? Here are some ways you too can be a positively influential influencer for gun ownership and shooting sports:
- Follow your favorite firearm-related accounts on social media. Make sure you turn on notifications and/or adjust your settings so that you see their most recent posts. Like and share when you feel compelled. Sometimes a simple “like” can open the door to a great conversation about firearms and shooting.
- If you’re uncomfortable coming out of the gun closet you can also seek out safe 2A spaces. Join private Facebook groups, the comment sections of pro-gun YouTube videos/channels and firearm-friendly forums to connect with other like-minded people.
- If you are reluctant to pull the trigger when it comes to posting photos or videos of your experiences to your personal social media accounts, consider creating accounts dedicated to your shooting interests. Share them with those you feel comfortable with when you feel the time is right.
- Not into social media? Many companies and blogs have dedicated email lists. I have one too if you’d like to subscribe. Often there are perks to adding another email to your inbox. Plus, when you find something valuable, you can forward to friends and family members who may be interested too.
- Finally, increase your gun-friendly situational awareness. Keep your eyes and ears open for comments or statements that could indicate you’ve found a fellow pro-gunner. It can be something as simple as the magazine they are reading on a plane or a logo on a hat or t-shirt. Strike up a conversation. It could lead to something special.
